Huel 2020 Review

Although you could technically class this as a supplement due to the fact it is in powdered form, I can assure you, it most certainly is not.  There are some horrible meal replacement supplements out there, which don’t provide anywhere near the full spectrum of macro and micronutrients the body needs, meaning if you are having more then one shake a day, your body will be missing out on a lot of very important nutrients.

Huel provides the body with everything it needs per day and then some.  Each serving provides a full day worth of the recommended vitamin and minerals plus a full profile of essential fatty and amino acids (a huge plus when trying to build muscle or maintain muscle when on a cutting diet).

It is claimed you can replace all food with Huel, a from a nutrition point of view, yes you could.  But from a sanity and boredom point of view no you can’t.  Also per average meal of 100g of Huel, it will cost $2..5/£1.61.  Now if you were someone who required near 4000 calories a day then it could get very expensive only having Huel.

If this, however, was something you wanted to try, I would try to follow some of the recopies provided so you are not only drinking shakes each day.

Effectiveness – Provides the body with everything it needs

I am, and always will be a big fan of including meal replacements in any type of nutrition plan.  Sticking to a nutrition plan, especially when trying to cut down on body fat can get tough, and is made even tougher if everything starts becoming a chore and taking up to much of your time.  By this I mean eating boring plain meals, eating constant cold meals out of Tupperware tubs and spending hours cooking and preparing food each day.

Having a few meal replacement shakes as part of your plan takes all these negative points away.  It cuts down both eating and cooking time and frees up so much more of your day, allowing you to do the things you need to do.  The problem is, however, finding a meal replacement that is healthy, non-processed and provides the body with all the nutrition it needs.  Well with Huel, we have this in every bag.

Since taking Huel I have found my energy levels stay much more levelled out, meaning no peaks and then drops.  I am still consistently performing and getting stronger in the gym, and just feel like I am actually putting something good and nutritious inside my body with every shake.

Ingredients – what does Huel provide

You don’t need to be an expert in nutrition to see how impressive the ingredients list is.  Also, I don’t think there is anyone with any dietary needs or beliefs that couldn’t have this.  Not only is it completely free of animal products, meat, fish, egg, soy, and dairy, making it suitable for vegans, they now have a gluten-free version also.  The gluten-free version is slightly more expensive though.

The main ingredients come from Oats, pea protein, brown rice protein, flaxseed, and coconut.  They have also added there own unique blend of vitamins an minerals to make sure you are getting your whole daily requirement in just one shake.

You will see below that the macronutrient profile of each serving is excellent.  You will notice how incredibly low in sugar this product is, making sure you have a sustained energy source through the day and not a trans fat in sight.  HEALTHY HEALTHY HEALTHY.

Huel meal replacement ingredient list

Okay, I have read the odd review saying how bad the taste is.  I personally go for the vanilla flavoured Huel and don’t think it’s bad at all.  In fact, I’ve come to quite like it.  It’s extremely mild and tastes a bit like milky oats.  If you add other ingredients like berries, bananas, etc and blitz in a blender then its really nice and tasty.

They now also have different flavour pouches which you can buy.  These include:

  • Strawberry
  • Toffee
  • Mocha
  • banana
  • chocolate
  • pineapple and coconut
  • Cacao
  • Matcha Tea
  • Mint Chocolate
  • Rhubarb and Custard
  • Caramel

Although I really enjoy the Vanilla flavour, I have tried several of these including toffee, chocolate, banana, strawberry and Rhubarb and Custard.  The only one I wasn’t 100% keen on was rhubarb and custard.

Update for 2019

Huel has added some new products to their range.  All consisting of the same ingredients we have come to love.  These include

  • Huel bars
  • Huel ready to drink shakes
  • Huel chocolate mint flavour (no flavour pouch needed)
  • Huel Chocolate flavour (no flavour pouch needed)
  • Huel Coffee flavour (no flavour pouch needed)
  • Huel Berry flavour (no flavour pouch needed)

I am yet to personally try the bars or ready to drink Huel.  You get the same ingredients as the powder, yet it’s a more expensive way of consuming Huel.

When mixing in a normal shaker bottle with no mixer ball or top on the lid, you could find the odd lump in your shake.  When using a mixer ball or lid all lumps have been broken down.

Make sure you use the recommended amount of water, as if you use much less, then you will more likely find those lumps in your shake.

I personally mix mine in my Nutribullet, making it 100% lump-free.

Value for money

So, in my opinion, no one should ever just live off shakes.  Eating is a big part of life and you would get sick and tired very quickly.  Huel is an extremely nutritious meal replacement designed to make your life easier and make sure you are getting all the nutrients in your body needs.

So if you use it to replace a few meals a day it is great value for money and the 2 bags you get with a $66/£45 order could easily last you for a few weeks

I personally have 3 to 4  shakes a day meaning a $66/£45 order lasts me between 1 to 1.5 weeks, which is still great value for money, for what you are getting.

Our Final Verdict – Should you try this product

Although it has a few flaws, one being not everyone will like the initial flavouring, and two being the odd lump showing up if mixing it in a normal shaker bottle, this product is excellent.

I personally have nothing but good things to say about it and it has been one of the sole reasons I am able to consistently keep on track with my nutrition.  So if this is something that you think could be for you then I would definitely advise you pick up some Huel today.

  1. Do you know!
Each day, I will always perform my daily exercise without seeing any result., but I never knew eating boring plain meals, eating constant cold meals out of Tupperware tubs and spending hours cooking and preparing food each day can be the reasons for not having effective results of my daily exercise.

    Thanks very much. It’s informative

    • Hi Matron

The issue with having to do that every day, is it makes it very hard to stick to any kind of plan.  It’s just not needed.  Also if you are not reaching your goals then it may be down to your calorie intake.  Check out my article on calories here.…

  2. Huel! Great introduction, I think, getting the unknowns out of the way early with the prices as well as the Pros & Cons! You remove the guessing game that similar products force you through on their pages. Spelling out the difference gave me an option of whether to read on or cut is short.

You didn’t lose me when going over the effectiveness of the product by using the medical/nutrient terms that might have force me to look up some definitions.

Your breakdown of what I would be getting from Huel but you made sure that I along with any reader would know that certain items were not used in it by listing them out. There’s no guessing game going into this product at all.
Your excitement for this product comes through in your reporting very well.

Has Huel been known to have any side effects with anything to date?

    • Hi Donnie

Thanks for taking the time to read my review.  I personally have never experienced any side effects from using Huel.  I have 3 shakes a day as well.  However, some people have experienced side effects when first starting out.  There are a lot of ingredients the body will need to get used to.  The main problem could be the large increase in fiber in most peoples diets when starting with huel.  The body really doesn’t like sharp and extreme rises in fiber and as a result of this you may experience stomach ache, and some bloating.

If you don’t currently consume a lot of fiber then start by just adding one huel shake into your diet and gradually build it up.  I hope this helps
