When choosing a pre-workout, there are a few things that you need to look at.  I list all these below for you to consider.

Best Pre Workout of 2019 Reviews

#1.  Legion Pulse Pre Workout Supplement

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Based on careful scientific research
  • Offers a nice energy boost
  • Naturally sweetened
  • Offers a good source of Beta-Alanine and caffeine

Cons

  • It could taste better

Legion Pulse is a popular pre-workout supplement that made it onto our list of the best pre-workout supplements thanks to its excellent combination of ingredients. This product includes high levels of caffeine and Beta-Alanine, as well as some additional amino acids that are meant to help reduce muscle fatigue and aches while enhancing endurance levels. The supplement is available in a sweet Fruit Punch flavour and it is naturally sweetened, helping to give it a cleaner flavour overall while helping you to remain healthier during use.

This supplement comes in an attractive screw-top bottle and is made for easy scooping. Add some of the product to your shake that you have before heading to the gym, and you’ll be working harder than you have for years. The supplement is backed by science and makes use of all sorts of proven ingredients that are meant to help you have boosted energy levels and more athletic ability when you get going in the gym.

Use this supplement just before heading to the gym and when you arrive you’ll be ready to work very hard. We weren’t crazy about the fruit punch flavouring that this supplement has, and it’s something that users will need to adapt to after making the switch from a different product. It works well though and can help increase your motivation during workouts and might even improve your results with time. We like the overall mix of this pre-workout, and that’s why it’s our number one entry on our best pre workout list.

#2.  GAT Clinically Tested Nitraflex

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Good flavor selection and taste
  • Designed for maximum energy and stamina enhancement
  • Heavily tested

Cons

  • Lacks creatine

Nitraflex is a highly recommended pre-workout tool that is used by all sorts of lifters, but we weren’t expecting too much in the way of muscle gains while testing this product out, because it intentionally leaves out creatine in its formula. The product is designed nicely though, and actually offers some nice improvements that make it worth considering as a long-term pre-workout solution.

To start off with, Nitraflex packs in 325 mg of caffeine into every single serving, which is more than enough to get your heart pumping and to help give you the blood flow enhancement that will help you feel energized and ready to tear up the gym. This supplement also adds some nice nutrients like L-Arginine, Beta-Alanine and Citrulline. Each of these has many researched benefits when it comes to things like energy and stamina enhancement, just giving this supplement mix even more credibility. Users of Nitraflex report enhanced stamina, more energy to get through those last few sets while at the gym, and the ability to progress through plateaus, which is what we think this supplement is best for.

Nitraflex is offered in three different flavours, Fruit Punch, Blue Raspberry and Black Cherry. The Black Cherry solution is the favourite of most users and offers a good taste that seems to be the most enjoyable. If you’re looking for a way to break through plateaus and to start lifting more weight with the same efficiency as your old set levels, Nitraflex might give you the energy that you need to reach your new goals. We are impressed with this formula enough to add it to our best pre workout list, and it’s a good tool for making progress even if it lacks the creatine that can help with muscle development.

#3.  Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Pre-Workout

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Nice sweet flavours with a good variety of tastes
  • Excellent nutrient blend for improved performance
  • A lower amount of caffeine than other pre-workout solutions

Cons

  • Lower caffeine levels might not be effective for some

Gold Standard Pre-Workout by Optimum Nutrition is one of our favourite long-term pre-workout solutions for a few different reasons. First of all, it isn’t loaded with caffeine as much as many of the other products that we’ve reviewed. With 175 mg of caffeine per serving it will certainly pick you up and get you going before a workout, but shouldn’t cause jitters or other side effects as often as some of the other options with higher caffeine levels. This makes it better for long-term use in our opinions.

This product also comes packed with an excellent mix of nutrients that should in theory boost energy levels, stamina and muscle gains over time. There is Creatine, Beta-Alanine, and L-Citrulline Malate in each of the servings for a good solid mix of some of the most important building blocks of solid pre-workout formulations. This healthy balance of good ingredients and a reasonable level of caffeine makes it easy putting Gold Standard Pre-Workout on our best pre-workout list.

On top of just being a good blend for workout success, this product comes in some interesting flavours that are quite good. Choose between a standard like Fruit Punch, or go with something more interesting such as Green Apple or Blueberry Lemonade to get you going before the gym. The packaging looks quite nice for this pre-workout supplement as well, which is a plus to those that leave the tubs out on the counter in between uses.

Gold Standard Pre-Workout is a good starting product or an option for weightlifters that aren’t already heavy coffee drinkers with a high level of caffeine tolerance. Consider it if you want to get going without an insane level of caffeine going through your blood as a lighter stimulant user, or skip it for something more potent if you are already a heavy caffeine user.

#4.  Vintage Blast Pre-Workout

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Lasts longer thanks to time-release formulation
  • Good flavour
  • Catchy packaging
  • Carefully created to aid in recovery after the workout is complete

Cons

  • Lower caffeine levels than some would like

Vintage Blast is an interesting product to use for a few different reasons, and it’s those key differences that make it a worthy contender on our best pre-workout list. The first, and most important of all the attributes of this product is that it delivers more even and long-lasting energy boosts than many other pre-workout solutions do. Thanks to the careful design, this supplement offers an energy increase that lasts for up to two times as long as standard pre-workout does. It’s because the product has a time-released feature built-in, so you aren’t getting that second punch of energy until later into the workout as you’re starting to come down from the first.

The second reason is that the energy boost is more even and comfortable than what you get from some pre-workout solutions. Vintage Blast comes with fewer jitters and other side effects than other pre-workout formulas. It feels a bit milder overall, but still provides that burst of energy that helps take workouts to the next level. With a total of 250 mg of caffeine in two different stages, it’s easy to keep going but you won’t become as overwhelmed or overstimulated as you would from other pre-workout solutions.

One thing that we really love about Vintage Blast pre-workout is that it makes use of stevia as its sweetener in favour of natural sugar or aspartame. This makes it more usable for those with conditions like diabetes, and it helps cut down on sugar intake as well. The product still has a nice sweet taste to it and is quite enjoyable to drink.

Vintage Blast is carefully designed to not just get you through a workout, but also to aid in recovery after your time in the gym is complete, which is arguably the most crucial time for building muscle. It’s rich with electrolytes and has ingredients that help cut down the oxidants in your body helping to minimize soreness after a workout.

Vintage Blast is a unique solution that offers a nice change of pace from the more standard pre-workout options. It comes in a pretty appealing and funny package that has that vintage feel that we love as well. It’s worth picking up and testing out and is one of our favourites.

#5.  Nitrosurge Pre-Workout Supplement

Nitro Surge Pre Workout

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Good mid-level caffeine dose of 180mg
  • Contains important amino acids
  • Interesting flavours

Cons

  • The package contains just 30 servings

Nitrosurge is a high quality mid-level pre-workout supplement that made our list of the best pre-workouts for a few different reasons. It serves as a good mid-range solution with 180mg of caffeine per serving. That’s lower than many and higher than some of the others on our list. The solution comes with most of the important amino acids that will aid in muscle development and enhance endurance during use.

Users report good clean energy from this supplement without the jitters or feelings of discomfort that come from other options available today. That’s largely due to the fact that it has a more reasonable dose of 180mg of caffeine per serving. This supplement contains Beta-Alanine, as well as L-Citrulline and Beta Anhydrous all in one, which all help in boosted endurance and energy in their own way. It’s based on a good formulation of proven ingredients and should be a reliable supplement for serious lifters and other athletes looking for the most out of their workouts.

We only noticed two downsides with this product that keep it from being perfect. The first is that it lacks creatine, a substance that many rely on to improve muscle gain and success in the gym. The second is that a single container has just 30 servings overall, half of what’s offered by some of the other pre-workout solutions available today. Nitro Surge still made it to our best pre workout list for its high-quality formula, good taste options and its mid-level caffeine dosing.

#6.  PRE-KAGED Pre Workout Powder

Click the Image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Dissolves quickly and easily
  • Offers a good pump during use
  • Uses an excellent blend of ingredients

Cons

  • Does not taste great

Between the hefty dose of caffeine (274 mg) leucine and taurine, this pre-workout solution packs a serious punch! It’s one of the more potent pre-workouts that’s on our best pre workout list, and it’s one that we recommend to people that want to experience dramatic energy boosts and a serious pump during workouts.

During the testing period, we noticed a few key observations about this pre-workout. The first is that it mixes in water more smoothly and evenly than many others. It’s been carefully formulated to mix well and creates a smooth drink that’s a bit better to swallow. With that said, the flavour of this pre-workout solution just isn’t great. It has a distinct chemical flavour and whether you get fruit punch or Krisp Apple you probably aren’t going to love the way this stuff tastes.

Taste aside, Pre Kaged is designed well and delivers a serious energy boost and pump. It comes packed with a massive dose of Citrulline that helps with the pumped feeling, and that should provide additional motivation while working out. We love that this supplement comes with all the most important ingredients. It features Beta Alanine, creatine, and then a good solid blend of amino acids and BCAAs. Thanks to its excellent formula, it’s hard to overlook this supplement, even if it doesn’t have the best flavour during use.

#7.  Gaspari Super Pump Max

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Creates an amazing pump
  • Great Tasting
  • Good level of caffeine

Cons

  • Maybe too mild for some
  • Doesn’t provide as much energy as other pre-workouts

Different lifters have different preference levels when it comes to the blend of ingredients in their pre-workout formula. We really like the mix that goes into Gaspari Super Pump Max because it’s a bit easier on new lifters that don’t like the intensity of other solutions. This mix is designed to be a bit milder, while still providing serious motivational benefits. There is around 200mg of caffeine in the current blend, as well as a good mix of Citrulline, Leucine and Carnipure. That means during use you’ll experience a muscle pump and a warming sensation, but fewer of the more offputting sensations of other pre-workout supplements.

This pre-workout is offered in three different flavours, Black Cherry, Blue Raspberry and Fruit Punch. While all of them are very sweet, we found them to taste quite good and actually preferred the flavour of this pre-workout solution to many others that we tested beforehand. If you don’t mind a sweet drink, this is a good solid option to take before the gym. If you don’t like things that are overly sweet, you’ll want to mix this with a whole lot of water to dilute it down when taking it before a workout.

While Beta-Alanine has been tested to deliver some improvements to workout performance, many lifters don’t like the tingling feeling that they get when using supplements that contain the compound. That’s one of the reasons that we’re pointing people to Gaspari Super Pump Max. This stuff delivers a good energy boost and can help improve workout levels, but doesn’t create the tingling sensation nearly as much as other options do. Without Beta Alanine it’s the perfect option for lifters that simply can’t deal with the tingling that other pre-workout solutions cause.

For a good mix with fewer downsides, no tingling sensation and a reliable energy boost and pump enhancement, this pre-workout supplement is worth a try. It might not give you as intense of an experience as others, but that’s what some lifters prefer about it, and why many continue to use the product for years after testing it out.

#8.  BSN N.O Xplode

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Good flavour options
  • 325 mg of caffeine per serving for a huge boost
  • Designed to minimize soreness after use
  • 30 and 60-day serving options to choose from

Cons

  • Some people say the new formula is less potent

N.O. Xplode Pre Workout Igniter is a powerful pre-workout supplement that can be used on a regular basis to boost your workout performance. This supplement comes in three different flavours, and offers some nice energy boost and pump benefits, but we’re just as impressed with its ability to help you recover as its ability to help you get a solid workout in.

N.O. Xplode comes packed with 325 mg of caffeine per serving, and a good mix of amino acids and compounds to boost endurance, energy levels and pump during your workout. This solution also contains electrolytes and compounds meant to minimize oxidation and cut down on muscle soreness.

While testing out this supplement we were impressed by how quickly the pumped up high energy feeling comes into play, and we were also impressed by the different flavours offered. This comes in three different flavours, Fruit Punch, Blue Raz and Birthday Cake Remix, and each is pretty good. We found the Fruit Punch to be the best flavour of the mix though.

When searching for a high power pre-workout supplement, it’s hard to overlook BSN N.O. Xplode. It comes packed with the most important nutrient bits and pieces and will make you feel ready to take on the world. This product is available in 30 and 60 serving packages and is a good option for everyday workout pump and endurance boosts.

#9.  Cellucor C4 Original Pre Workout

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Good flavours
  • Mixed for pump and endurance
  • Excellent energy boost with just 150mg of caffeine

Cons

  • Caffeine might not be enough for some

Chances are good that if you’ve been looking for a pre-workout supplement to enhance your workouts, you’ve heard of C4 at least in passing. This supplement is very popular and well-known, plus it has a catchy name.  Despite all the hype around this product, it is a good solid option to choose for regular workout enhancement for a few reasons, and those reasons are why we’ve made it part of our best pre workout list.

The first is because it has all the ingredients that you need for boosted energy, enhanced endurance and improved pump. You get the pump from 1g of Arginine per dose. The 1g of creatine can help bolster performance and boost muscle gains, and the Beta Alanine is supposed to help with endurance enhancements. There is just 150mg of caffeine in this pre-workout solution, which is significantly less than others, but still enough to boost energy levels nicely. Between all those different nutrients and compounds you get a nice enhanced workout from C4, or at least that’s been our experience with it.

Cellular C4 original is an excellent supplement for regular use not just because it’s designed to give boosts in all the right areas, but because of how carefully the flavours were engineered as well. Whether you choose Cherry Limeade, Frozen Bombsicle or Icy Blue Razz, they are likely to taste better than many other pre-workouts you’ve tried in the past. C4 is a treat to drink and has a similar flavour to Kool-Aid if you’ve ever had that in the past. It will likely make you sweat harder than usual, and will give you tingly or even itchy feelings in your hands or feet during use, but will help boost your workout motivation and performance. It’s a good entry-level pre-workout supplement and there are many reasons to like it and prefer it over the other options on the market right now.

#10.  Muscle Tech NeuroCore

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Highly affordable with 36 servings
  • High caffeine dose per use
  • Comes with creatine

Cons

  • Itchy tingling is too strong for some
  • Just two flavours to choose from

When working out on a budget, Neurocore from Muscle Tech is a good option to consider. This pre-workout supplement is one of the most affordable options that we tested, and it still delivered many of the same benefits. Sure, it goes a bit lighter on compounds like Beta-Alanine and Citrulline than some of the other items on our best pre workout list, but there’s more than enough in this pack to keep you going strong.

Neurocore comes with 325 mg of caffeine per dose, which will get even someone with a heavy caffeine tolerance going. It has creatine, Beta Alanine and Citrulline for a good pump, endurance enhancements and energy boosts. Overall, this pre-workout is designed well to help improve workout effectiveness.

The only fault that we have with this product is that it only comes in two different flavours and neither is particularly good. It doesn’t taste terrible, but you likely won’t look forward to drinking this pre-workout in the morning. Other than that, it’s good for the money, offers some serious performance improvements and will work on even those that drink a few cups of coffee every morning to get going.

#11.  MusclePharm Assault

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Eight different flavours to choose from
  • Based on good research
  • Offers a solid pump and energy boost

Cons

  • Most of the flavours aren’t great

If you’ve been into working out and testing out different pre-workout solutions for years, MP Assault has a lot to offer you. This is a mid-range pre-workout supplement that’s designed to work with those that are used to caffeine, or those that have been taking other supplements for years already. MP Assault comes in a stunning eight different flavour varieties, and it is sold in several different styles, letting you pick and choose the one that you like the best.

In terms of what actually goes into this pre-workout, we really like what it has to offer. It mixes Beta-Alanine, Creatine, caffeine, taurine and Beatine together to create a powerful blend of ingredients. There is approximately 250mg of caffeine in each serving, which packs a serious punch. Of course, this pre-workout also contains many vitamins and minerals for good health, and it packs in some electrolytes to help restore your body after the workout is complete.

If you’re searching for a product that’s going to boost your workout and give you lots of different flavour options to choose from, this is a good solid investment. It doesn’t hurt that it’s affordable either. We recommend it to serious athletes looking for a bit more motivation early in the morning.

#12.  Cobra Labs The Curse

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • 50 servings per container
  • Cool looking tub
  • Good tasting flavours

Cons

  • Lower caffeine than will work for some people

The Curse by Cobra Labs is one of our favourite pre-workout supplements because it’s economical and packs all the good stuff in one large container. You get a mix that has a modest 145 mg of caffeine, Beta-Alanine, L-Citrulline, Creatine and Citric Acid all in one. It’s easy to take and has a good flavour and is perfect for a nice boost to your morning workout without the comedown of more serious pre-workout supplements.

We tested out the four different flavour options offered with this product, and most of them were pretty good without the strong medicine flavour that is in some other options. This supplement comes with more than enough pre-workout to keep you going for a month or more, and since you get so many servings per container you can easily take a double serving when you want an extra boost.

Even the look of this pre-workout container is very good and we like displaying it out on the counter. Most users report a good clean energy boost without a crash, and they have fewer problems with tingles than with many other options. We thoroughly recommend The Curse as a first pre-workout supplement, or as an option when others are just too powerful.

#13.  BPI Sports 1.M.R Vortex Pre Workout

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Offers a powerful energy boost
  • Designed to improve endurance
  • Delicious flavour options

Cons

  • Doesn’t specify all ingredient amounts
  • Can cause jitters

As the cheapest of all the pre-workout supplements on this list, BPI Sports 1.M.R. Vortex is a good solid option for athletes that want to spend as little as possible on their pre-workout solution. Users remark about how good most of the flavours taste for this supplement, and about how much of a kick the product gives.

We are hesitant about recommending this product to new athletes or lifters that are sensitive to caffeine because this solution seems to have a high concentration of caffeine. The supplement doesn’t give clear numbers about what it contains, but most users experience major energy boosts, enhanced endurance, coupled with tingling sensations and a jittery feeling. Overall, this supplement is an interesting blend of good and bad and is a good place to start.

With that said, if you are interested in knowing exactly what is in your pre-workout supplements, this isn’t a good option for you to go with. The packaging doesn’t list many specifics and you’ll be left wondering what you are taking during use. It’s designed for a good pump and good energy boost though, and is a good cheap option, especially with so many servings per package.

#14.  ProSupps Mr Hyde NitroX Pre-workout

Click the image to see the best prices on Amazon

Pros

  • Good flavour
  • Blends in Beta Alanine, Creatine, Citrulline and caffeine
  • Affordable

Cons

  • Insane 400 mg of caffeine per serving

Mr Hyde is the most intense pre-workout solution on our list of the best for 2018, and it should only be taken by seasoned athletes that have used pre-workout in the past. This product packs a serious punch and can lead to discomfort for some users. With that said, we really like the blend of ingredients that are used in this pre-workout.

A good blend of Beta-Alanine, Creatine and Citrulline are all present in this formula. Not only that, but there are three different blends of caffeine included, and some electrolytes for recovery purposes.

Mr Hyde isn’t a good pre-workout solution for those new to taking in caffeine unless you want to really cut down on the dosage when using it. It is excellent for long-term users that aren’t getting the same effects from their original pre-workout though. If you want something more intense that is going to help you take your workouts to the next level, it’s worth looking into this product. Just be careful with it and avoid taking in too much additional caffeine throughout the day, because there is a lot here.

Best Pre Workout of 2019 Buyers Guide

Think of the Flavorbest pre workout of 2018

When putting together a list of the top pre workout supplements of 2018 we always take some time to think about the taste of these products. We make sure that each offering has a good flavour that’s enjoyable to drink. Sure, we would much rather have a supplement mix that works well than one that tastes good, but why not have both of those things whenever you can? Not only do we focus on whether or not flavours are good, but we look for flavour variety in one type of pre-workout as well. It’s nice to have choices and you might want to swap through flavours while using the same pre-workout formula.

Look at the Caffeine Content

Caffeine is one of the most important ingredients, if not the most important of all the ingredients when examining pre-workout supplements. It is what gets your blood flowing and gives you the rush of energy that helps you have the very best workout each time. We like to shoot for a balanced level of caffeine that will help you feel good during a workout without causing negative side-effects like jitters. The products included on our best pre workout list includes some low in caffeine options, middle levels of caffeine and very high levels, and it’s up to you to choose an option that fits your own personal caffeine needs.

We Like Citrulline

Citrulline is an ingredient that’s added to many of the best pre-workout supplements on the market today for one reason, it’s shown to increase the pump that you feel during workouts. Many experts agree that vascular pump, or that full swollen feeling in your muscles, is important for building bigger muscles. If that’s one of your goals, then having Citrulline in your pre-workout solution is a bonus and something that you’ll want to look for when picking one out. That’s why we searched for pre-workout solutions that contained the substance when picking them out.

Look for Creatine

Creatine isn’t a get ripped quick fix that will help you put on massive amounts of muscle in a short period of time, but it can help you build muscle more effectively while also boosting your energy levels during a workout. After looking at the caffeine content of a pre-workout supplement, we look for creatine when adding products for our best pre workout supplements list.

Beta-Alanine is Good

Beta-Alanine has been tested and shown to improve endurance numbers for those working out, and it’s something that we look for when buying pre-workout. With that said, Beta-Alanine is an acquired ingredient and not everyone enjoys it. We look for some pre-workout options that have the substance and others that don’t. It’s likely to help with endurance boosts, but also causes a tingling sensation that some people just don’t enjoy. Keep this in mind when picking out a pre-workout mixture. If you get tingles or itchy feelings while using it, that’s probably the Beta-Alanine. If you don’t like that sensation, you’ll want to look for an option that doesn’t come with it while offering most of the other benefits that you can get from pre-workout.

Manage Nutrient Deficiencies

High-quality pre-workout supplement options should also have some Vitamin D and Magnesium offered. These are two common vitamins and minerals that many people are deficient in that help with building muscle and maintaining strength and energy levels while at the gym. With a good dose of each of these nutrients in your system, you’ll be far more prepared to take on the hard work.

If you’re actively looking at all of the above when examining different supplement options for your pre-workout routine, you’ll be more likely to find a quality product. Of course, there are additional nutrients that could make your supplement even better, but many products toss in a bunch of unnecessary extras to make their product look better than it actually is. Make sure you are getting something healthy and designed for strength and endurance improvements without adding in every single vitamin and nutrient that they can get their hands on.
