Best Home Gym for Bodybuilding

#1. Marcy Diamond Elite Smith Cage

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The Marcy Diamond Elite Smith Cage is one of our favourite products on our list of the best home gyms because it offers an impressive variety of exercises all built into one system. The unit is big and a bit costly, but it enables you to do most weight training exercises that you could want all in one system for maximum convenience.

This Marcy smith cage packs in an Olympic free weight rack, a cable pulley system and a smith bar with a 600 lbs. weight capacity. It offers an impressive weight plate storage area and overall is just a solid performance piece of equipment if you have the space for it and you’re willing to pay the cost for it. Add it to your garage or a dedicated room in your home and take care of all your lifting needs with just a single system. It’s a great value for what it offers.

Pros

Has a Smith Machine

Integrated plate storage

Smith bar with 600 lbs. weight capacity

Multi-function weight bench

Olympic free weight rack

Cable routed pulley system

Cons

× Quite Pricey

× A bulky machine

× Using the Pully can be a bit awkward for certain movements

#2. Valor Fitness BD-7 Power Rack

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The Valor Fitness BD-7 power rack is an impressive piece of equipment for anyone looking to get a full-body workout in safely while at home. The system includes a large full-cage power rack as well as a dual pulley cable crossover system. Together these two devices enable you to complete most lift types and to get in a very capable full-body workout. The rack comes with four different plate storage pegs, giving you the space to store a lot of Olympic weights so they’re easily accessible.

This system is costly but worth the investment for anyone looking for a durable full-body workout station. It features a pair of safety bars that will adjust to 27 different height positions for support exactly where you need it every time. The bars can support up to 500 lbs. when used outside of the weight cage and an impressive 650 lbs. when used within the cage for support.

The unit also features an overhead pull-up station made from solid steel and featuring knurling for an excellent grip. It’s all built with 12 gauge steel and very solid, making it a tough piece of equipment for extreme workouts.

Pros

4 plate storage pegs

Pull up station with knurled grips

500 lbs. support weight capacity outside

650 lbs. support weight capacity inside the cage

27 bar support positions

Cons

× Crossover pulley cable will wear with higher weights

× A large bit of kit

#3. Marcy Olympic Multi-Purpose Strength Training Cage

Click Link Below to See Images

Users looking for an affordable training cage will enjoy the Marcy Olympic Multi-Purpose strength training cage, which is why this piece of equipment is on our list of the best home gyms. The kit is a bit lightweight compared to some of the other items on this list, but it’s affordable and a good option for a tough full-body workout for new lifters. This cage comes with a set of high hand low pulleys, dip bars and safety catch bars for good full-body workout options. Between these three accessories, you should be able to do most lifts and weight routines that you could want at home. There are some downsides to this equipment though.

This set is built from tough steel and constructed with durability in mind, but it’s only rated to 300 lbs. for the safety bars. This isn’t enough weight for many experienced lifters when doing major lifts like squats. The dips bar is also very wide apart and not adjustable, which can make many of the different dip movements awkward or difficult. If those few cons don’t bother you, there is a lot to like about this low-cost full-body gym. Pick up an affordable set of Olympic weights with a 7-ft. bar and start lifting for strength gains.

Pros

Multi-handle pull-up station

High and low pulleys

Solid steel construction

Dip bars included

Plate storage system

Cons

× 300 lbs. weight capacity on bar catches may not be enough for some

Best Body Weight Home Gyms

#1. Weider Ultimate Body Works

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The Weider Ultimate Body Works machine is a comprehensive full-body workout system that makes use of your body weight along with a few resistance bands to give you a pretty decent workout. This machine is affordable and lightweight while offering more than 50 different exercises. While this machine likely isn’t the best for bulking and putting on muscle, it’s excellent for toning and building strength, especially for new lifters just looking to get started.

This Weider machine is built to withstand up to 250 lbs. and uses pulleys to enable you to do a wide range of upper-body lifts as well as a few lower body lifts. The kit comes with an exercise guide to help you figure out how to use the machine, and through a smooth sliding platform that you lay on during the lifts, the system is able to generate enough resistance to make many different lifts challenging. There’s an adjustable incline to adjust the resistance level as well. There are also four power bands that offer up to 50 lbs. in additional resistance to the different movements for maximum difficulty.

Pros

Affordable

A lovely smooth movement

Includes cable bands and pulley system for added resistance

Includes exercise guide

Supports more than 50 exercises

Cons

× Maximum weight capacity of 250 lbs.

#2. TRX All-In-One Suspension Training System

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The TRX All-In-One Suspension Training System is a clever suspension-based workout system that relies on your body weight for resistance. This kit includes a door anchor and a wall anchor that you hook straps to in order to perform different body-weight exercises. The kit includes a carry bag, nylon straps with handles, door and wall anchors and cards and a guide to teach you how to do different exercises using the system.

The system is durable and reliable for long-term use and can be used for nearly 100 different movements. Our only issue with this system is that it is time-consuming and a bit cumbersome adjusting the straps for the many different movements. This TRX suspension system would be a good travel solution when no gyms are available, however, which is one of the main reasons it’s on our list of the best home gyms.

Pros

Works for more than 100 different exercise positions

Tough suspension anchor

Included door anchor

Includes mesh carry bag

Sturdy nylon straps with reinforced construction

Cons

× Lots of adjusting need for different exercises

#3. Total Gym 1400 Deluxe

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

Most people have heard of the Total Gym and know it for a decent quality brand of body-weight exercise equipment. The Total Gym 1400 Deluxe is another good system that offers long-lasting performance. It’s a mix of good and bad though, but it offers enough to make our list of the best home gyms in 2019 for body weight exercise. This system uses a gliding platform and pulleys to provide adjustable resistance for more than 60 different exercises.

When the system is in use it offers smooth performance and glides up and down on the track noiselessly. It features multiple incline adjustments to change the difficulty of the lifts. We found the available resistance levels to be a bit limited during testing, which is why it’s best for novices or lifters not looking to lift too heavy. It is also time-consuming to switch from one lift type to another using the included accessories, but swapping resistance levels is quick and easy.

The glide bed is also quite short, making this unit potentially uncomfortable for taller users. Overall, the Total Gym 1400 Deluxe is a capable home gym, but it’s best for novices looking to get started with resistance training and most users will outgrow this system over time.

Pros

Offers 60 different exercise movements

Smooth moving platform

Compact when folded for storage

275 lbs. weight capacity

Cons

× Limited weight resistance

× Short glide bed

× Takes time to swap accessories

Best Portable Home Gyms

#1. BodyBoss Home Gym 2.0 – Full Portable Gym

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

For getting started working out and developing strength, the BodyBoss Home Gym 2.0 is a good starting point. This full-body workout set is built to offer reasonable resistance training in a range of movements all with a kit that you can bring with you anywhere.

The kit includes resistance bands, clip handles, padded straps, a door anchor, a stiff base and a rotational bar. These accessories together allow you to do everything from squats to presses, core exercises, curls and more. The bands don’t work well for every exercise but between the different accessories, you should be able to accomplish many different lifts and stretches reliably using this set.

The only issue with this well-built portable workout kit is that the bands simply don’t stretch enough for some of the movements to work if you’re a taller individual. If you’re around 6’ tall or taller this kit likely won’t work well for you, or at least some of the movements won’t because you’ll stretch the bands too far. It’s a good starting point for many people looking to get into shape though.

Pros

Durable resistance bands

Tough clip handles for a solid grip

Padded straps for comfort

Complete with rotational bar

Includes door anchor

Cons

× Limited range of motion for tall users

#2. TRX Go Suspension Trainer System

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

For good solid workouts on the go using just your body weight, the TRX Go Suspension Trainer system is a solid tool and good to have in your travel bag. This kit isn’t as good as going to a gym and working out with a full room of weights, but it will work your muscles, get your blood pumping and help you stay in shape while on the go.

The kit comes with straps, handles and anchors enabling you to suspend yourself and workout using your body weight. The kit is tough enough to support up to 350 lbs. of body weight, making it usable for most. It’s a bit thinner than the full-sized TRX system, and the anchors are confusing to use at first, but it’s sturdy enough for everyday use and a good solid solution overall.

Pros

Lightweight and compact

Supports up to 350 lbs. of body weight

Durable material construction

Includes one-year app subscription

Includes a convenient carry bag

Cons

× Thinner than the full-sized version

× Anchors are confusing to use

#3. Bullworker 36

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The Bullworker 36 is a tough spring rod and band fitness tool designed to work your entire body with resistance from springs and bands. This unique bit of equipment offers massive resistance and helps to train muscles through isometric exercises. We really like the Bullworker 36 because it’s well-made and very durable. This equipment is clearly built to withstand heavy workouts.

The kit itself comes with three different springs for different levels of resistance. The set is lightweight and can be taken on trips and anywhere easily. It also comes with a spiral-bound exercise book, helping to explain all the different movements you can do with the equipment to get stronger. This portable home gym takes time to get used to using, but once you’re familiar it’s a powerful device that can help you get in shape.

Pros

Adjustable resistance from 0 to 130 lbs.

A heavy made piece of equipment

Thick construction quality

Excellent exercise book

Cons

× Takes time to learn different exercises

Best Budget Home Gym (Under $350)

#1. XR 55 Home Exercise Gold’s Gym

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The XR 55 is a good home gym system for working your entire body while on a budget, as long as you have the time to assemble the system. It’s time-consuming to put together and can be difficult at times. Once assembled you’ll enjoy a system of pulleys, built-in weights, a leg development system, a preacher curl attachment, and more. The system only comes with 125 lbs. of vinyl weights which won’t be enough for some users, but it has the ability to support a total of 330 lbs. of resistance for all the movements.

This home gym uses a system of pulleys and a weight stack for resistance. It operates smoothly and delivers challenging workouts as long as you are newer to lifting. This home gym isn’t ideal for seasoned lifters, but it’s a decent option for people looking to start lifting for improved health.

Pros

330 lbs. of resistance

High and low pulleys

Leg developer system

Cons

× Just 125 lbs. of vinyl weights

× Long assembly time

#2. Weider 2980 214 Lb. Stack Home Gym

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The Weider 2980 home gym made our list of the best home gyms because it’s affordable and a good starter setup. This gym is a bit limited but includes a preacher curl attachment, an overhead bar, a fly attachment and a leg curl bar. Between these several accessories, you can accomplish many different lifts, but there are other lifts that you simply won’t be able to do using this gym.

New lifters will likely be more than happy with the 214 lbs. of provided resistance, but eventually dedicated users are likely to outgrow the available weight. If you’re searching for a home gym that’s affordable and offers a decent starting point to begin working out with. This Weider set isn’t too bad. It’s a bit limited and takes time to assemble, but offers

Pros

Preacher curl attachment

Leg curl attachment

Fly attachment

Solid construction quality

Cons

× Limited movements

× Difficult assembly

#3. Goplus Multifunctional Trainer Home Gym

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The GoPlus Multifunctional Trainer is an interesting bit of home equipment that makes use of your body weight in order to provide a range of lifts for building strength. The unit looks like a traditional weight machine with an arm press, a leg extension, an overhead bar and more equipment, but it’s highly adjustable and doesn’t come with the heavy stack of weights that make standard machines difficult to move around.

The backrest, the arm press and several other pieces of equipment can be tilted and angled for different workouts. This home gym uses your body weight in order to provide you with resistance, so the more you weigh the more resistance is available for a workout. Adjust the resistance setting between nine different locations and control precisely how much effort you have to put in to get a good workout.

This machine is smooth and makes it possible to get in a range of muscle-building lifts in. Our only complaint is that the top resistance available isn’t all that impressive. While the system is good for new users, many people will outgrow this system eventually and have to look for a more demanding system instead. It’s a good value though and an excellent way to start getting fit.

Pros

Has an arm station

Includes leg station

330 lbs. load capacity

Tough steel build quality

Cons

× Offers minimal resistance

Home Gyms Buying Guide

Selecting the top home gym isn’t simple to do and requires some very serious consideration. That’s why it’s so important to understand how to evaluate the different equipment and to also know what is important for you from a home gym. Some equipment will work much better than others. Below we outline our main considerations when comparing equipment against one another. Use some of these considerations yourself to help you determine which purchases make the most sense for you personally.

Space Considerations

Everyone has a different amount of space available for workouts and home gym equipment. These space requirements largely determine what sort of equipment you can invest in and what gear will be best for your home. We consider the space requirements of each home gym system and favour the options that are more compact. When

Durability

No matter what sort of home gym you want to purchase it needs to be well-made in order to be safe and reliable. That’s why we take the time to measure durability and to verify that the equipment we recommend will hold out properly over time. We look for heavy-gauge steel construction, thick webbing, heavy stitching and rock-solid performance that leaves no doubt that the equipment is going to continue performing as expected long after purchase.

Value

We don’t rule out any equipment based on its price, but we don’t suggest equipment just because it’s affordable or because it’s listed at a premium price either. No matter what the price tag is on a home gym, we look to see if enough value is being offered by the equipment to justify the price tag. Some of our lightweight equipment or equipment with few features are still included on this list because they’re affordable. Some very costly equipment is also included on the list because it offers enough value to make up for its price.

Effectiveness

When searching for products for the list of the best home gyms, we spent time looking at countless items to see which were most effective at their specific jobs. We separated different home gym products into categories such as body-building specific, portable gyms, body-weight gyms, budget gyms and more. With each product in a defined category, we evaluated the product based on how effective it was for that specific category. For instance, bodybuilding home gym equipment is evaluated how well it works for bodybuilding lifts and developing muscle. The portable home gym is evaluated by size and how well it works your body on the go in a place such as a hotel room. We test each home gym based on how well it does what it was made to do for good reliable comparisons.

Resistance

For lifting and exercise resistance is often measured by weight. When comparing these different home gyms we measure resistance in several different ways, but no matter how resistance is defined we look to see if the systems offer enough of it. Some systems offer a beginner level of resistance, while others offer a much more serious level of resistance that would be good for long-term lifters. We overview just how much resistance a piece of equipment provides and try to explain who the equipment is meant for based on that resistance measurement.

Stability and Comfort

Finally, we look at how smooth, stable and comfortable equipment is to use. If a home gym is uncomfortable, you aren’t likely to use it regularly, at the same time, if it’s smooth and feels good to use, you’ll be more inclined to work out. That’s why we favour machines with rubber grips, underpadding, thick foam padding, lumbar support and other touches that help make it as comfortable as possible. Whether the equipment relies on resistance bands, heavy steel pulleys, or some other mechanism, that mechanism should offer silky smooth performance and make it easy to go through each of your workouts. We also look at how long it takes to switch from one movement to another to make sure getting your entire workout in is efficient and convenient.

By using each of these different considerations we were able to build our list of the best home gyms in 2019. It was a time-consuming process, but we’re proud of the equipment on our list and stand behind it. If you’re interested in selecting gym equipment for use in your home, think about which of the above considerations mean the most to you, and decide on equipment that will work best for your needs.
