Best Under the Desk Elliptical

#1.  Cubii Jr: Desk Elliptical with Built-in Display Monitor

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The Cubii Jr is a pretty tough little elliptical for use under a desk at work while playing on a computer at home or during any time you would normally be sitting and stationary. The unit isn’t cheap, but it does offer a good solid workout. This little guy is simple to assemble and only requires a few screws and takes a few minutes to put together.

This desk elliptical comes with a data monitor and tracks information like calories burned and total time ridden. The one flaw we noticed with this unit is that it only counts up to 99 minutes during use before resetting. This might be a potential downside for owners that work out for longer than that throughout the day.

It features an attractive colour scheme and is available in four different colour finishes all showcasing black with another bright colour. Select the unit you believe is styled most nicely and enjoy a good solid workout. This little unit works well for multi-tasking situations and can be used at work or at home.

The Cubii Jr is quiet and comfortable to use and offers eight different resistance levels for owners to select from. Most users report it offers adequate resistance for a tough workout and many users of old desk ellipticals remark that the Cubii Jr is more effective overall.

If you’re looking for a way to keep in shape while still working at a desk for much of the day, this little unit is the perfect solution. It comes at a premium price for a desk elliptical, but we’ve added it to our list of the best home elliptical machines for 2019 because of how effectively it operates and provides a solid workout to users.

When searching for an effective under-desk elliptical we think it’s more important to get something that performs well than to get a product that’s cheap. Fortunately, with the Stamina In-Motion elliptical you an have the best of both worlds.

This little unit is very affordable and it still offers enough resistance to give a decent workout as well. Simply adjust the dial to get the tension level right where you want it, slip this under your desk and start your workout whenever you feel like it while maintaining your position at work or at home. This unit comes with wide-set legs with rubber grips for good stable performance every single time.

We love how lightweight and transportable this elliptical is. It’s small enough to bring too and from work every day if that’s something you’re interested in doing, and the machine is quiet enough to use in the office. It offers many different tension levels and even experienced riders should be able to turn up the tension enough to get a good workout in.

The little unit comes with a data monitor for tracking your effort throughout the day and is an excellent way to burn up some additional calories without having to schedule cardio into your day. It’s not a perfect machine though. This little elliptical could do with a carry handle for transporting it around more comfortably. Either way, it’s a good investment and certainly worth its cost for how well it works for getting daily exercise.

Best Compact Ellipticals

#1.  Sunny Health and Fitness Magnetic Elliptical Machine

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

When space is limited but you still want to get a good solid workout in you can rely on this Sunny Health and Fitness elliptical. It made our list of the very best home elliptical machines in 2019 because it’s compact and offers smooth performance.

This low-cost elliptical isn’t gym-grade equipment by any means, and it won’t feel the same as working out on a commercial machine, but it will provide you with a good workout even if you don’t have the room for a full-sized elliptical machine. The system offers eight different resistance levels and it comes equipped with a multi-function display that lets you track key data points as you exercise. The whole unit comes fitted with anti-slip legs for stable performance and it won’t rock or vibrate during use.

This machine is clearly lightweight and looks a bit flimsy at first glance. It’s tough enough to offer good stable performance to most users though. It features a neutral black and silver colour finish and is protectively coated against rust and wear for long-term performance.

The elliptical has grip handles and pivoting handles allowing you to adjust how you hold the machine and whether you engage your arms or not during a workout. While this machine operates smoothly and offers reliable performance without making much noise, it does have a few downsides. The stride length on this elliptical is short and might feel unnatural to taller users.

The elliptical also has a maximum weight limit of just 220 lbs. which will keep many people from being able to enjoy it. This makes it excellent for shorter users looking for something compact to fit into an apartment or a smaller room. Even with those potential downsides, this machine from Sunny Health and Fitness offers respectable performance and can help you obtain an excellent workout while using limited indoor space to do it in.

Pros

Eight different resistance levels

Space-saving design

Multi-function data display

Anti-slip legs

Affordable

Cons

× Just a 220 lbs. weight capacity

When you have a smaller footprint to work out in the Efitment compact magnetic elliptical machine is a useful tool to help you get your workout in. It’s a reasonably priced unit that will fit in a smaller room without issue. It doesn’t compare to a commercial elliptical and doesn’t feel like one of those full-sized machines either. Instead, you get a more compact, smaller stride workout to keep you in shape. The elliptical is quiet and smooth and is very simple to move around, making it a good versatile little workout machine.

It comes with thick adjustable feet to help create a stable footprint that won’t shake or vibrate during use. The elliptical has an LCD display and shows off pertinent information about each workout that you complete so you can look back on your workout. It swings freely and nearly noiselessly, but it doesn’t swing very far. This is one of the most notable downsides to using this lightweight elliptical machine.

It only offers an 11” stride length, which is going to feel unnatural to anyone used to a commercial elliptical. If you’re taller this machine won’t afford you a full range of motion. Instead, it will cause you to focus your workouts on your thighs more than your other leg muscles. It offers eight different magnetic resistance levels, making it easy to custom tailor each workout that you complete. There is also a pulse sensor and a built-in heart rate monitor so that you can adjust the pace of your workouts to push your body properly throughout a workout.

This little machine only supports up to 220 lbs. preventing it from being an option for everyone. The elliptical is fitted with transport wheels and is easy to move around anywhere that you want to take it. Move it from one room to the next with ease and enjoy a workout anywhere in your home that you want. Overall, the EFitMent elliptical is a good tool for staying in shape. It’s a tough little machine and should hold up well if used properly, but it will be limiting for taller users.

Pros

Small footprint

Moves easily with transport wheels

Smooth performance

Quiet operation

Equipped with a clear digital display

Cons

× Only 220 lbs. weight limit

× Limited 11” stride length

Best Budget Elliptical (Under $200)

#1.  Body Rider Fan Elliptical Trainer

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

While most of the ellipticals that we recommend rely on heavy flywheels and magnetic resistance to deliver a tough workout, this budget Body Rider unit does things differently. It has a fan wheel that produces resistance as it moves around in a circle. Sure, there is also a resistance knob that you can use to turn the tension of the unit up or down, but the fan wheel is what creates the base resistance that you’ll be fighting against in your workouts. The fan is surprisingly smooth and stable and delivers a good workout while presumably helping to make the unit more affordable.

Once you decide that you want to turn up the intensity of your workouts you can use the tension knob on this budget elliptical to up the difficulty. It does get much harder and will work for a long time for most people.

This lightweight elliptical is easy to move around and comes with a pair of transport wheels at the front. It uses a chain-driven wheel and is smooth and quiet during operation, but not as quiet as the units with magnetic resistance. This elliptical has a very basic LCD display that looks like it’s from 20 years ago or more, but it does provide you with basic data about your workout.

The machine is smooth and enjoyable to use, but it comes with one flaw that we noticed almost immediately. The elliptical feels like it’s slanting forward. This is a bit odd to get used to, but after some time on the elliptical, it didn’t seem like as big of an issue as it once did. Some buyers have taken to propping up the front of the machine to give it a more balanced feel, but we don’t mind using it as it is.

Overall, this Body Rider elliptical is a good piece of equipment that should work well for most users. It offers a decent stride length and a good range of resistance options, all while being one of the most affordable units that you can purchase today.

Pros

Smooth chain driven fan wheel

Includes workout video

Features adjustable tensions resistance

Comes with an LCD screen and computer

Built with transport wheels

Cons

× Downward slant

#2.  Goplus 2 in 1 Elliptical Fan Bike Dual Cross Trainer Machine

Click Image To See Best Price On Amazon

The Goplus 2 in 1 Elliptical Fan Bike is an interesting machine that lets you enjoy a tough elliptical workout as well as a stationary bike workout at the same time. The unit relies on fan-based resistance to make workouts difficult and performs smoothly whether you are using the unit as an elliptical or an exercise bike.

It comes with built-in heart rate sensors to give you your pulse while exercising. This unit comes with a set of non-slip pedals that will help you remain firmly in place while standing or sitting and using it. It features a modern electronic display that shows off all the most useful workout data as you push your body.
This machine has an adjustable seat that you can move up or down, but one of the biggest cons of the unit is the seat. Most users report that it’s uncomfortable and invest in a seat cover or pad to make it more enjoyable to use. This product relies on a felt resistance belt system to generate the necessary resistance to give you a tough workout the entire time that you want to push your body. Just crank the knob and achieve the resistance level that you want every time.

A pair of transport wheels make this unit easy to move around in a single-level home or apartment so that you can workout anywhere you like. It’s smooth and stable during use and offers good capable performance to most users that want to test it out. Overall, the Goplus 2 in 1 elliptical and exercise bike is a good investment and an excellent way to work out.

It does have a few flaws though. Many users complain about screws becoming loose over time and having to regularly tighten them. Threadlocker can help resolve this issue and keep the machine nice and tight during operation. The felt resistance pad also wears over time and will eventually require replacement to keep giving you the resistance you need for a tough workout. Other than those minor issues this beauty is good for many workouts and offers you the flexibility of exercising on a bike or an elliptical depending on how you’re feeling that day.

Pros

Highly adjustable seat

Built-in heart rate sensor

Unique 2-in-1 design

Oversized non-slip pedals

Foam armrest covers

Cons

× Uncomfortable seat

× Screws loosen over time

× Felt resistance belt must be replaced

Home Elliptical Buying Guide

Choosing the perfect elliptical isn’t a simple decision to make and it should take some time. You’ll want to consider things like the size requirements of each particular machine, the price point they are being sold at, how smooth and quiet they operate and how difficult of a workout each machine can provide you with. Finally, you should consider the different features that each of the machines has to offer so that you can narrow in on the ellipticals that offer everything you’re looking for. It will take some time to find that perfect machine, but once you have it you’re going to want to hold onto it and enjoy the heart-pumping workouts you can achieve with it.

Space Requirements and Mobility

While this isn’t the most important consideration, we do want to think about things like space requirements and a machine’s mobility when organizing elliptical machines into a top list. Some users will be happy to get an oversized elliptical that will take up most of a standard sized room, but other users with limited space available will want something smaller. We try and separate machines by their size and explain the space requirements that each one has. Ultimately, it is up to you to make sure you have enough space to accommodate an elliptical and get a good workout in.

Consider the total arm and glider movement on each unit and whether you have clearance in the front and rear of the machine to allow natural movement. Some of our favourite compact ellipticals come with wheels and a lightweight that makes it easy to move them from room to room when trying to work out.

Smooth Performance

Female athlete wearing a green top and purple shorts using a Precor elliptical machine inside a gym.

Using a high-quality elliptical feels very similar to gliding in place and it’s an invigorating experience and makes for an enjoyable workout. When grading different ellipticals we look for that same experience every single time. There are a few different elements that help to create that experience. The first is a smooth belt-driven setup that relies on a flywheel to create a smooth and enjoyable performance from beginning to end. The second is a large enough stride length to move your legs naturally. We look for both of these factors whenever possible, but do have to settle a bit when looking at compact units. All the full-sized units offer a large enough stride length to satisfy even tall users, but some of the compact units lack that stride length. In order to save space, many smaller ellipticals reduce the available stride length, and this can make using them feel strange for larger users. This is something to consider when shopping for different ellipticals. Make sure you check the total stride length and get familiar with the stride length that you require for a good comfortable workout.

Noise Output

Most people want to be able to enjoy watching television or listening to music during a workout, so it’s no good for the machine to make excessive noise. Not only that, but some users live in apartment buildings or busy houses where others might be sleeping when you want to get a workout in. That’s why we try and recommend quiet ellipticals whenever possible and we make a note when a machine is louder than expected. Good ellipticals are nearly silent and rely on magnetic resistance to up the intensity of a workout.

Workout Difficulty

One key feature that we look closely at when deciding on ellipticals for our list is the total resistance available and the workout difficulty you can achieve with each elliptical. A high-quality elliptical works muscles and the cardiovascular system at the same time, but that’s only possible if the machine offers enough resistance. We look for multiple resistance levels and an elliptical that’s going to offer challenging resistance levels for months or even years of use as a user grows stronger.

Consider the Features

Finally, it’s important to look at all the extras that any particular machine comes with. Some ellipticals are fitted with tablet holders, cooling fans, water bottle holders and more. Don’t allow these extras to determine which machine you choose to workout with entirely, but use them to help you differentiate between multiple machines that are close together in build design and performance.

Lets Wrap This Up

By making all of these different considerations you can more accurately select an elliptical for use in your home. It’s not easy choosing the top equipment option, which is why we assembled a list of the best home elliptical machines above.   Explore the list and all the items on it to see what you should be thinking about while shopping in 2019. The machines are organized by type to make it easier to evaluate your options based on what you need for your own home workouts.
